“Narratives of (Un)sustainability: Assessing U.S. Oil Culture”
Zmarła Dr Justyna Kociatkiewicz
27 marca 2019 r., po kilku latach zmagań z nieuleczalną chorobą, zmarła dr Justyna Kociatkiewicz. Miała 49 lat.
Dr Kociatkiewicz uzyskała doktorat na Uniwersytecie Wrocławskim w 2001 r. Na jego podstawie powstała monografia Towards the Antibildungsroman: Saul Bellow and the Problem of the Genre (Peter Lang, 2008). Dr Kociatkiewicz była współredaktorem tomów naukowych pt. Traveling Subjects: American Journeys in Space and Time (Rabid, 2004) oraz Eating America: Crisis, Sustenance, Sustainability (Peter Lang, 2014). Jej zainteresowania badawcze koncentrowały się wokół problematyki gatunkowej i kwestii narratologicznych – szczególnie strategii narracji konspiracyjnej – we współczesnej powieści amerykańskiej. Publikacje dr Kociatkiewicz obejmowały również problematykę formacji charakteru w literaturze i kulturze amerykańskiej, problemy płci kulturowej w dziewiętnastowiecznej powieści europejskiej, zagadnienia współczesnej powieści historycznej, teorie narracji filmowej i problematykę adaptacji filmowych. Dr Kociatkiewicz prowadziła kursy z zakresu literatury amerykańskiej, teorii literatury i teorii narracji filmowej. Zorganizowała szereg konferencji i warsztatów naukowych. Była stypendystką programów Tempus (Strathclyde University, Glasgow) i Fundacji Fulbrighta (Uniwersytet Kalifornijski w Berkeley) oraz wieloletnim aktywnym członkiem Polskiego Towarzystwa Studiów Amerykanistycznych. W latach 2005-2013 pełniła w Instytucie Filologii Angielskiej funkcję zastępcy dyrektora ds. dydaktycznych.
Dr Kociatkiewicz była postrzegana jako osoba niezwykle błyskotliwa, energiczna, serdeczna oraz obdarzona nietuzinkowym poczuciem humoru. Była wybitnym dydaktykiem.
Pogrzeb odbędzie się w poniedziałek 1 kwietnia na cmentarzu Parafii Świętej Rodziny przy ul. Smętnej (Sępolno) we Wrocławiu. O godz. 14:00 rozpocznie się Msza żałobna, a pochówek będzie miał miejsce bezpośrednio po niej. Dr Kociatkiewicz prosiła, by na pogrzeb nie przynosić kwiatów, a zamiast nich wnieść drobną wpłatę na konto Polskiej Akcji Humanitarnej https://www.pah.org.pl/wplac/ lub Fundacji im. 4th Methodologies in American Studies Workshop

The 2018 MAS workshop focuses on biohumanities – a cutting-edge field of inquiry that attempts to reconcile the natural and medical sciences with the humanities. The integration of theories and concepts from ecology, biology, anthropology, medical sciences, and psychology, as well as political science and philosophy, to name only a few, offers innovative approaches to the study of non/human agency, citizenship, cultural and environmental change, and economic processes. Importantly, life sciences add to our understanding of the human being and open up a critical space for rethinking and reevaluating the established approaches to the study of American culture and its global impact.
Venue: Institute of English Studies, University of Warsaw
Format: 2-day workshop consisting of five 3-hour sessions,
a plenary lecture, and a summing-up session
Eligibility: The workshop is open to young scholars who are either working on their doctoral dissertations or have recently received a Ph.D., and who are affiliated with an institution of higher education in Central/Eastern Europe.
Since the number of participants is limited to 20, the organizers reserve the right to select the applications based on geographic and academic criteria.
Description: International scholars and members of the Polish Association for American Studies will offer a series of 3-hour workshop sessions on biomedical humanities as perspectives on the critical study of American literature and culture.
Participants will also have a have a chance to seek advice from the instructors on problems related to their research projects.
The workshop format requires that all participants read the assigned set of materials in advance. Reading materials for each workshop session will be made available online by 15 September 2018.

Call for Papers
The TSA is coming to America. For the time since it was established in 2002, the TSA is holding its annual conference on the other side of the Atlantic. TSA is a broad network of scholars who use the ‘transatlantic’ as a frame of reference for their work in political, economic, cultural, historical, environmental, literary, and IR/security studies. All transatlantic-themed paper and panel proposals from these and related disciplines are welcome.
This conference thus welcomes papers in the following areas:
- History
- International Relations and Security Studies
- Literature, Film, and Culture
- Planning and the Environment
- Economics
- Proposals that investigate the ‘transatlantic’ and explore it through frames of reference such as ideology, empire, race, religion, migration, political mobilisation, or social movements
- Proposals that incorporate perspectives that involve north-south and south-south transatlantic connections, as well as north-north
Both panel proposals and individual papers are welcome. Panel proposals are encouraged to include a discussant. New members and junior scholars are especially welcome.
