CALL FOR PAPERS 2016

Explorations: A Journal of Language and Literature is a peer-refereed online journal published by the Department of the English Language and the Department of English Language Literatures at Opole University, Poland (for more information and the current issue see http://www.explorations.uni.opole.pl). For the next issue of the journal, to be published in December 2016 we invite articles addressing language- and literature related topics in an original and innovative way. We welcome interdisciplinary approches ranging across lingustics, critical theory, and literary and cultural studies. Each submitted article will be peer-reviewed by academic experts selected from relevant fields of research.

Contributions are expected by June 30, 2016. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by September 30, 2016.

Nobrow: The History and Future of Popular Culture

Traditional distinctions between highbrow and lowbrow are not sufficient to describe the cultural production of our times. We live—and have been living for a long time in the age of nobrow, which intertwines art and entertainment into a complex yet identifiable mode of cultural practice. Our increasingly global, digital, and culturally eclectic world is dominated by endless varieties of nobrow culture. Yet, with few exceptions, the historical nature, aesthetic complexity, and social interpretation of this cultural formation have largely escaped critical analysis.

Editors of a first-time collection on this subject, entitled Nobrow: The History and Future of Popular Culture, invite articles on all and any aspects of nobrow culture and art. Inherently transcultural and transnational, nobrow lends itself equally to historical and analytical approaches. We welcome scholars from all parts of the globe and from all disciplines, including, but not limited to literary studies, cultural studies, film studies, art history, aesthetics, communications, digital culture, history, philosophy, anthropology, sociology, and others. We are particularly interested in theoretical and analytical articles on the phenomenon of nobrow illuminated by detailed and colourful case studies of this crossover phenomenon.

Chapter contributions will be approximately 7,000 words. To be considered, please send an abstract of 500 words along with a biographical note to both editors, Peter Swirski (swirskip@umsl.edu) and Tero Eljas Vanhanen (tero.vanhanen@helsinki.fi). The deadline for the abstract is 30 April, 2015.

Terra Foundation for American Art International Essay Prize

In Partnership with the Journal American Art

The Terra Foundation for American Art International Essay Prize recognizes excellent scholarship by a non-U.S. scholar in the field of historical American art. Manuscripts should advance the understanding of American art, demonstrating new findings and original perspectives. The prize winner will be given the opportunity to work toward publication in American Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s scholarly journal. He or she will also receive a $1,000 cash award and a travel stipend of up to $3,000 to give a presentation in Washington, D.C., and meet with museum staff and fellows. This annual prize is supported by funding from the Terra Foundation for American Art.

Ph.D. candidates and above who have not published in American Art previously are eligible to participate in the competition. Essays may focus on any aspect of historical (pre-1980) American art and visual culture; however, architecture and film studies are not eligible. Preference will be given to submissions that address American art within a cross-cultural context and offer new ways of thinking about the material. A strong emphasis on visual analysis is encouraged.
